Glucosamine is a well-known supplement to help with arthritis and joint problems. But, do you know that glucosamine in creams or oral supplement helps with anti-aging for skin care?
There are 3 benefits of glucosamine in skin care:
- Prevents liver spots and freckles
- Reduces wrinkles and fine lines
- Improves moisturization of the skin
Evidence of benefits in creams
Alexa Kimball, assistant professor of dermatologist at Harvard Medical School headed one of three studies on topical use of glucosamine. She applied cream containing N-acetyl glucosamine , which is a more stable version , on volunteers and measured for pigmentation on the skin and skin condition after sun exposure.
The conclusion from the studies showed that glucosamine inhibits the pathway that produces pigment on the skin after sun exposure. So, it can prevent liver spots and freckles.
In another study of N-acetyl glucosamine and niciamide applied in cream on Japanese volunteers, showed that the combination stimulates collagen production and re hydration of the skin.
Evidence of benefits in oral supplement
Murad H Tabibian reported in the Journal of Dermatology that oral supplement of glucosamine, amino acids, minerals and various anti-oxidants showed visible reduction in wrinkles and fine lines on the face of volunteers.
Glucosamine works because it is a precursor of glycosmaminoglycan and proteoglycan, which are types of collagen found in our cartilage and skin. So, it is inducing the natural production of collagen in our body.
How much glucosamine should we take to see such effect? Typically 1500 mg dosage per day is needed.
Glucosamine has a long track record of being safe. However, it is derived from shellfish. So, for those who are allergic to shellfish, it is better to avoid it. People who are diabetic should consult their doctor before taking it.
You can easily find oral supplement and skin care with glucosamine in the market. I am using Herbalife , Skin Active Replenishing Night cream containing glucosamine amongst other anti-aging ingredients. I find improvement in the elasticity and find lines on my skin.
