When you are going through a detox program, you will expect to face a problem called healing crisis. In the scientific term, healing crisis is called Herxheimer Reaction.
Healing crisis happens when your body tries to eliminate toxins faster than it is prepared for. The more toxins removed, the more severe the healing crisis.
The symptoms are signs that the treatment is working. The reaction is temporary and can occur immediately or within several days or weeks upon the start of the treatment.
What cause healing crisis?
The body systems are working in concert to eliminate toxic waste through all the channels. It set the stage for cell repair and regeneration. Old tissues die and are replaced by new ones.
During detox and cleansing, a large amount of bacteria die off and release a significant amount of toxins within the bacteria, which are released in the body. The toxins cause a reaction or flare up in the body. The more bacteria die off, the more toxins are release, the stronger the reactions.
What are the symptoms?
Healing crisis normally brings about past conditions, diseases or injuries to flare up. It often comes after you feel that you are at your best and most energized.
- Aches, pains in joints, muscle, head and other parts of the body
- Extreme fatigue or restlessness
- Sinus congestions, fever, chill, cold or flu-like symptoms
- Arthritis flare up
- Insomnia and mood swings
- Nausea, cramps
- Skin eruptions, eczema, acne and rashes.
How should you handle?
1) Drink plenty of water. Flush off the toxins from the body with water, juices, herbal tea.
2) Rest well to manage the extreme fatigue and tiredness caused by the overload of toxins in the body systems.
3) Eat plenty of wholesome foods such as fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Avoid processed food and processed carbohydrates that will text the body systems further.
4) Cleanse the colon to remove undigested waste that will add onto the toxin loads.
Do not be unduly alarmed by the healing crisis you face during a detox process. It is a sign that the detox is working. When you persevere with the detox program and handle it., you will reap the reward of a renewed body that is ready to function at its best.

Hello, I started a detox three days ago by incorporating daily raw juices, smoothies, and coffee enema into my regimen. I feel great the first day, the second day my nose started to get runny and I felt a little off. The third day, soon after my coffee enema when I washed my face broke out in mild hives and became slightly itchy. I still have the runny nose, slight itchiness sporadically on my body here and there, and foggy/ tired feeling at the end of the third day. All of this is bearable and I’m glad to know it’s working and looking forward to getting through it. Good to know it is a healing reaction and how to address it.
Hello,
You are certainly going through healing crisis. Just bear with it and continue. Drink plenty of water to flush off the toxins in the body. Take simple and wholesome foods so that you are not loading the body with additional toxins.
To your good health, Su Lee
I have been detoxing for a little over a year. Recently stepped it up using some Micronized purple rice and of course continue my juicing. My body went into an arthritic flare up…joint pain, muscle aches in the back . arms, shoulders, and head. Haven’t had this in a long time. Extreme fatigue and weakness. My fear is that it is something more serious. But I am wondering if it is part of the detoxing process…
I started detoxing with bentonite clay about 2 weeks ago and just noticed an old ankle injury starting to flare up. I guess its working. I am only going to do it for a month and see how I feel.
