Chlorophyll is the green pigment found in all plants. It is the powerhouse of the plant, responsible for energy production. Chlorophyll is chemically similar to hemoglobin (oxygen carrying unit in red blood cell) except that the central metal ion is Magnesium instead of Iron.

Naturally, you can find chlorophyll in all green leafy vegetables and whole grains. However, chlorophyll is easily destroyed during cooking. So, to derive maximum benefits, it is better to eat it raw as in the form of vegetable juice or salads.

Another way of getting the benefits of chlorophyll is to take it in a supplement form of chlorophylin. It is a more stable form of sodium copper salt derived from chlorophyll.

What are the benefits of chlorophyll and chlorophylin?

1) Anti-cancer by binding carcinogens

Chlorophylin forms tight molecular complexes with carcinogens (cancer causing agents) such as harmful toxin in tobacco smoke and in cooked meat.

Professor George S. Bailey of Linus Pauling Institute showed that both chlorophyll and chlorophylin are equally effective in blocking the uptake of cancer induce agent in the liver to prevent liver cancer in rats.

2) Anti-cancer by detoxification

Chlorophylin reduce the activities of enzymes that are responsible for converting normal chemicals into cancer causing agents and causing damage to the cells. Hence, it reduces the risk of cancer.

3) Internal deodorant

Chlorophylin have been used in the 1940s and 1950s in wound dressing to deodorize the effect of foul-smelling wound. It is also taken orally for people with colostomies and ileostomies (diversion of feces from the colon into a pouch) to reduce fecal odor.

4) Antioxidant

It can neutralize oxidants and reduce oxidative damages induced by chemical cancer causing agent or radiation. Therefore, it helps to boost the immune system.

A study reported in the Toxicology in November 2000 compared the protective activity of mitochondria membrane against radiation and photosensitization of ascorbic acid, glutathione and superoxide dismutase with chlorophylin. The results showed that chlorophylin offered a much higher degree of protection than the other antioxidants.

Chlorophyll is the SUPER BLOCKER of all things toxic, cancer causing and foul smell. That is the reason why you should eat your greens everyday. Aim for at least 5 portions of it or take it in the form of supplements if you cannot meet the required portions.
